Watchmen

“Watchmen” is a limited series comic book created by writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colourist John Higgins. It was published by DC Comics in 1986 and 1987, and now comes in reprinted copies. Moore used the story to relate modern issues and to critique the superhero concept. The story is set in an alternate history around the 1940s to 1960s when costumed vigilantes, called Minutemen, helped fight crime and aided the United States to win the Vietnam War. Decades after in 1985, the U.S. is about to engage in a nuclear war with the Soviet Union. Superheroes are by then in retirement or working as government employees.

The Watchmen Film

After the murder of a government-sponsored superhero, those in retirement rose up confronting a plot to stop the nuclear war and ended up killing millions. The “Watchmen” film, directed by Zack Snyder, was released in March 2009. The film earned gross sales of 37 million pounds on the opening weekend and total income of more than 115.5 million pounds at the worldwide box office as of March 30, 2009. The film received mix reviews – praises for the visual effects and criticisms for stale adaptation of the comics.
